Just Born completes sweet acquisition

US-based confectioner Just Born, famed for its Marshmallow Peeps and Hot Tamales, has completed its acquisition of the Goldenberg Candy Company.

US-based confectioner Just Born, famed for its Marshmallow Peeps and Hot Tamales, has completed its acquisition of the Goldenberg Candy Company. The firm announced its intention to acquire Goldenberg back in January 2003.

"Bringing these two Pennsylvania companies together has generated a tremendous response from the industry and marketplace," said Sam Torrence, executive vice president and chief operating officer at Just Born. "We look ahead with great excitement to bringing delicious Peanut Chews to Just Born's ever-growing markets both domestically and abroad."

Privately-owned Just Born was founded in 1923 and in addition to celebrating its 80th anniversary in 2003, is also celebrating Marshmallow Peeps' 50th. The company markets its confections in over 30 countries.

"We are also very pleased to report that David Goldenberg and Mindy Goldenberg will assume key roles within Just Born," said Torrence. "Fourth-generation management, they will be invaluable in the integration of the Goldenberg brands into the Just Born offerings."

Torrence also confirmed that Goldenberg's will continue to operate at its Philadelphia location.

The Goldenberg family has a distinguished history in the American confectionery industry. Familiarly known as Goldenberg's, the company was founded in 1890 by Romanian immigrant David Goldenberg. The company initially produced a single brand, the Original Peanut Chews, before later adding a milk chocolate variety called Chew-ets.
