RFID tag a cold chain management tool

A new radio frequency identification (RFID) logger combines tracking and tracing with temperature readings, giving processors a way to identify when product safety may have been compromised.

Evidencia says its ThermAssureRF data logger combines an electronic in-transit temperature sensor and advanced micro-chip and wireless technologies to track inventory throughout an entire facility. RFID is touted as the next advance in supply chain management. Combination RFID and temperature logging tags provide processors with a means of complying with Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point requirements, including the maintenance of records for regulatory agencies. ThermAssureRF can also be tagged with Electronic Product Code (EPC), an international standard for tracking goods throughout the supply chain. "This RFID recorder is perfect for temperature mapping and cold chain management," the company claimed. The ThermAssureRF temperature sensor is credit card-sized, flexible, water-proof, and stand-alone. The wireless temperature sensor allows managers to monitor cold chain and temperature fluctuations over time during shipment and storage of temperature sensitive goods. The RFID tags store a 96 bit EPC code for logistics, and can log 4,000 temperature readings to an accuracy of about 0.3°C, the company claimed. Evidencia can also supply customised versions with up to 64,000 readings. The tags are passive RFID devices and so are approved by US regulators for use in aircraft and for tracking foods and pharmaceuticals. The tags come with programmable alarms, are tamper-proof, and water and shock resistant. The temperature loggers are currently being used by a variety of companies, include those shipping wine, produce, seafood, meat, poultry, pharmaceuticals, and cosmetics, Evidencia stated. ThermAssureRF comes with Windows-based data recorder software.
