Peter Lopatnik, marketing director at Moneta, told ConfectioneryNews.com that the new material is the outcome of work conducted by the R&D researchers at the packaging supplier’s headquarters.
He said that the 30 strong team has been evaluating nano coatings with aluminium foil for the past 18 months following on from the investment in coating technology and equipment at the firm.
According to Lopatnik, by applying the nanoparticle based coating onto seven micron aluminium film with eight colours rotogravure print, it means that the material has in fact the strength and stiffness equivalent to 14 micron foil along with excellent machinability.
“The coating solution consists of only 0.4 per cent nanoparticles, and all of the products manufactured by the company are CEE certified in terms of approval for direct contact with the food,” he continued.
Lopatnik said that Moneta is also in the process of producing insect proof heat sealable aluminium foil for chocolate tablets and bars.
“This material again comprises seven micron aluminium foil with strong tear resistance. It is cost effective in that it can be heat sealed at 70°C and has a non-scratch surface,” explained the marketing manager.
In addition, said Lopatnik, the Slovakian packaging supplier has also applied its nano technology expertise to waxed paper, which he claims results in a reduction of thickness from 45 GSM to 28 GSM and from 10 GSM down to 3 GSM of wax.
“Our new waxed paper retains the visual and textural properties of conventional waxed paper but the strength is now equivalent to 15 micron BOPP film.
Moreover, the heat sealability of our waxed paper is increased while at the same time it is easy to open as the thinner the film the better the memory in terms of twist wraps for chewy sweets,” he added.
