The recall affects 10.9, 21.8 and 40.7 ounce canisters distributed nationally and has an expiration date of October 2014.
Nestlé was notified by ingredient supplier, Omya, that the calcium carbonate used in Nesquik may contain salmonella. There were no reports of illnesses at the time of publishing.
The affected chocolate powder was produced in October 2012 and Nestlé said no other flavours or sizes are affected.
Tony Colak, Omya chief executive officer Region Americas, said their top priority is public safety after issuing a recall this week of food grade ground limestone products sold to distributors and/or manufacturers as ingredients for further processing in the US.
Colak added the firm had notified all of their customers who received the products and were working with government agencies involved out of an "abundance of caution".
