The Canadian confectionery company said improving safety by using metal detection equipment would give them a competitive advantage in a crowded marketplace.
Huer selected Sesotec’s C-SCAN GHF, a system for magnetic and non-magnetic metal contaminants with touch screen set up, USB capability, and HML multi-frequency technology.
Some products – including licorice and gummy candies – require different sensitivity settings so when setting up Huer‘s production manager went through synchronicity tests and running products through the system at least eight times to make sure product adjustments were correct.
Ryan Storey, Huer CEO, said he was ‘overwhelmed’ at the number of companies in the metal detection business after attending several packaging trade shows.
“No business wants a recall, so an ounce of prevention is clearly worth it,” he said.
“We’re in a business, when it is not always easy to differentiate yourself from the others in an obvious way. This is one effective way to do just that. We wanted to have a competitive advantage. I don’t believe all of my competitors use metal detectors. We saw that it would provide more confidence to our customers and could set us apart from the rest of the pack.
“Our retail customers like to partner with Huer because they want to partner with a company that is committed to making the necessary investments in equipment and food safety certification to ensure their brand investment is secure; therefore we must continue to produce everything in a safe and effective manner to grow our partnerships.”
The majority of the machine is made in Germany, with the conveyor system designed and manufactured in the US.
