Dow Coating Materials claims its Rhobarr Binders are manufactured without fluorocarbons, offering an alternative to existing food contact compliant coatings for paper and paperboard packaging

The Rhobarr 130 and 110 Binders can be formulated into thin-film coatings that retain flexibility when folded and strengthen oil and grease resistance (OGR) barrier coatings.

Performance attributes include hot block resistance, fatty acid barrier, improved liquid water barrier and retained properties when folded.

Bob Gargione, global business director, Functional Coatings, Dow Coating Materials, said the binders are a market disruptor in the paper-based packaging industry.

We’re seeing a shift in consumer behavior - they want convenient and more sustainable packaging options,” he said.

Rhobarr binders give the entire packaging supply chain a long-term technology to protect paper and paperboard packaging from damage from oil and grease, while excluding materials of concern to consumers.”

The binders were launched at PaperCon 2017, Minneapolis, Minnesota, US (April 23-26).
