According to the company’s statement, [an undisclosed number of] employees at the Cuba factory will be given the opportunity to transfer to Stauffer’s other facilities.

Stauffer’s Biscuit Company, headquartered in York, is a division of the Meiji Holdings Group, a Japanese conglomerate operating in the confectionery, dairy, healthcare and pharma sectors. The ¥1,242.4bn ($11.1bn) company is the world’s fourth largest confectionery company.

Stauffer’s still produces its popular Animal Crackers, first produced in 1871. The original recipe has remained the same, but the company has brought out a variety of animal shapes and flavors over the years.

Today, the bakery produces more than 250 tons of animal crackers, cookies and snack crackers daily.

Stauffer’s spokesperson told BakeryandSnacks: “The company will continue to produce the same volume once we have consolidated facilities as this effort was to optimize plant operations, not reduce production.”

The bakery also produces seasonal products for Halloween and Christmas.
