Nobó expands from ice cream into plant-based chocolate

Nobó health food has expanded from dairy-free ice cream into chocolate and has asked Parkside packaging to make a compostable wrapper for the range.

The Ireland-based company, set up by husband and wife, Brian and Rachel Nolan in 2012, plans to sell plant-based, ‘milk style’ chocolate as it moves out of the frozen food category.

Mark Shaw, New Product Development manager, Parkside, told ConfectioneryNews, the Nobó pack is a triple layer structure consisting of paper, NatureFlex and bio polymer sealant web and includes bio-based materials such as wood-pulp and corn starch.

We started our journey to develop our compostable Park-2-Nature range over six years ago,” said Shaw.

The Nobó pack is based on the Park-2-Nature range as it uses the same materials and processing but it is a completely separate brand in itself (Nobó)

We have developed a host of packaging innovations under our Park-2-Nature brand, including compostable and organically recyclable products derived from trees and other bio-based materials

After a four-year research and development project, the company has become the first in the world to successfully deliver a line of multi-layer paper and film barrier compostable laminates which adheres to the circular economy.”

Shaw added there is a growing consumer consciousness around sustainable packaging and this has driven brands with an ethical ethos to demand new and innovative forms of packaging.

“We believe our Park-2-Nature range of organically recyclable and compostable laminates meets these needs,” he said.

Bold & minimalist

The design of the Nobó plant-based chocolate packaging features a bold minimalist aesthetic in a range of colors and fine text elements.

Parkside worked with Hamillroad to utilize Bellissima digital screening technology that adjusts every pixel it produces.

The chocolate discs are made with sustainable plant based ingredients and are free from dairy, gluten, refined sugar and artificial additives.

The Nobó wrapper follows the successful production of a compostable pack for ethical food brand Rhythm 108 - Ooh-la- la tea biscuits.

Nobó’s first product, Frozen Goodness is a multi-award winning dairy-free ice cream that is now available nationwide and exported to the Middle East, Spain and the UK.
