Sirane threw the spotlight on its eco-friendly Earth Packaging when presenter and environmental campaigner Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall interviewed MD Simon Balderson at the company’s headquarters in Telford, UK, this month.

The interview was filmed ahead of the second series of BBC One’s War on Plastics and will be aired in April.

The Earth Packaging range includes ‘Earthpouch’ - a paper-based stand-up pouch with heat-sealable coating, and its flow-wrap film Earthfilm.

The products are best suited to dry and moist products including granolas, seeds and snacks, confectionery, porridge oats, grains, health/diet supplements, chocolate and more.

Sirane’s constantly innovating, and the environment is at the forefront of a lot of our thinking. Plastics and perhaps more specifically, removing plastics where possible, is the hot-topic,” said Balderson.

The War on Plastics team were keen to find out more about our plastic-free packaging within our Earth Packaging range, filming took place for most of the day, and we’re looking forward now to seeing the programme aired.”

Sirane’s Earth Packaging range will be on display at Packaging Innovations at the NEC this month (February 26,27).

We’re once again taking our eco-friendly packaging range to the Birmingham show – along with other more traditional and popular packaging,” added Balderson, who will be hosting a seminar in the Eco-Pack Theatre, on the topic of “Plastic food packaging: a tough act to follow. Where can plastic packaging realistically be removed from the supply chain, and what’s being done to develop solutions not currently available?

Shelf life extending films

The seminar is Thursday, February 27 at 1.35pm.

We have our award-winning plastic-free packaging Earthpouch, but that’s just one of a number of products in our sustainable range. We also have a number of exciting developments on the go, some of which may be on the stand,” he said.

Our range also includes both recyclable and compostable absorbent pads, compostable shelf-life extending films, and compostable plant pots.

But it not just about removing plastics. Plastic is still the answer in some cases. It’s about making sure the plastic used is easily recyclable and we have, for example, the ability to make pouches and bags out of pure PE, which can be recycled.”

EarthpouchAwards

2018 was a big year for Earthpouch with some major industry recognitions – it won a Green Apple Award, presented at the Houses of Parliament, and secured first place at the UK Packaging Awards in the Resource Efficient Pack of the Year category.

The Earthpouch was also recognised at the Sustainable Food Awards in Amsterdam, where it finished third in the sustainable packaging category.
