Germany's ice cream lovers are having to consume at home, until lockdown restrictions ease

The above-average sunny weather in June and the lockdown caused by the coronavirus pandemic have led to a significant increase in ice cream sales in Germany, according to the Association of the German Confectionary Industry (BDSI).

The BDSI reported that the GfK Consumer Index from March 2020, revealed ice cream sales in retail increased by 8% in the early part of the year.

Household packs for consumption at home grew particularly strongly by 15%. With lockdown and social distancing in place, sales of ice cream on the go was limited due to current contact restrictions, leaving consumers to enjoy their ice cream at home, the BDSI said.

The most popular types of household packs remained unchanged with vanilla and chocolate still the favourites with German consumers, followed by stracciatella, walnut, black forest cherry and Prince Pückler.
