The Easter egg roll is a White House tradition that dates back to 1878 and was started by President Rutherford B. Hayes. This year’s event (on Easter Monday) saw 30,000 people descend on the White House grounds under bright and blue skies with children and parents dressed in seasonal costumes to enjoy the fun competition of rolling brightly coloured eggs in the US President’s official residence.

Prior to the egg roll taking place on the White House lawn, many children participated in the day's events on Capitol Hill's South Lawn. Children learned the hills of the White House would be easy to roll their eggs down and President Hayes instructed his guards to let them in. Soon, children and their parents covered the lawn and enjoyed the festivities that grew into traditions, according to foxnews.com

With confectionery playing a large part in Easter traditions for most families, the National Confectioners Association (NCA) said it provided the chocolate and candy treats for the event, featuring products made by top American candy-making companies, including: American Licorice Company, Bazooka Candy Brands, Cargill, Divine Chocolate, Ferrara Candy Company, Ferrero USA, Ford Gum, HARIBO of America, Jelly Belly Candy Company, Just Born Quality Confections, Kenny’s Candy Confections, Kimmie Candy, Mars Wrigley, Original Gourmet Food Company, PIM Brands, R.M. Palmer Company, Stuffed Puffs, Taffy Town and The Hershey Company.

John Downs, President & CEO of the NCA, said:  “The National Confectioners Association is honoured to support the 2023 White House Easter Egg Roll with iconic, American-made chocolate and candy products. This time-honoured tradition celebrates the fun and joy the Easter season brings. America’s chocolate and candy companies are delighted to play a role in this exciting day and at other celebrations throughout the year.

President Joe Biden told media gathered on the South Lawn that he plans to participate in “at least three or four more Easter egg rolls, maybe five,” increasing speculation that he may run for another term in the top job.
