ISM 2017 innovations: New Product Showcase award winners revealed

The International Sweets and Biscuit Fair (ISM) has announced the top three innovations at this year’s show in Cologne, Germany.

Supplier trade fair ProSweets, held parallel to ISM, has also named the winner of its inaugural packaging award.

Around 700 visitors to the show voted for the most innovative confectionery and snacks launch from 220 products presented at the New Product Showcase at ISM between January 29 and February 1.

The 47th​ ISM is currently taking place in Cologne, Germany at Koelnmesse until Wednesday February 1. The show features around 1,650 exhibitors from 68 countries.

The winners of the New Product Showcase were…

1. Misfortune Cookies  - Pechkeks GmbH

Hamburg-based company Pechkeks took the top award for the ‘dark twin’ of the fortune cookie: ‘Misfortune Cookies’.

The company was setup in 2013 in Germany and began producing English-versions of its Gothic-themed, jet black cookies in 2015.

The company’s CEO told ConfectioneryNews that Pechkeks is targeting growth in the US market and hopes to move beyond speciality gifting stores and into premium retail in confectionery aisles.

2. Organic Veggie Box - ChipsBox GmbH

Munich-based startup ChipsBox took second place for its ‘Organic Veggie Box’ launch, which features carrot, beetroot and paprika vegetable chips.

The organic, gluten-free and vegan product uses air-dried vegetables meaning the product isn’t fried.

The company began just one year ago and has distribution in Germany, UAE and Scandinavia. It hopes to expand into supermarkets throughout Europe, the UK and the US.

3. Pralibel Dômes by Pralibel NV

Belgian firm Palibel was awarded bronze for its gifting chocolate brand Pralibel Dômes.

The company was last an ISM innovation winner in 2011 and this time impressed with its bright and elegant packaging.

Packaging award winner: tri d’Aix

The first ever winner of processing, packaging and ingredients fair ProSweets’ packaging award was the Barbecue Marshmallow Grill Bag by tri d'Aix GmbH.

The packaging is inspired by traditional barbeque briquettes.

The ISM Award 2017, recognizing long-standing and exceptional services to the confectionery and snacks industry went to Gota Morinaga, director and chairman of Japanese firm Morinaga.

The award has been running for the past four years. Previous winners are:

  • 2014  - Herman Goelitz Rowland Sr., chairman 
  • Jelly Belly Candy Company, US
  • 2015 - Felix Richterich, proprietor and CEO of Ricola, Switzerland 
  • 2016 - James N. Walker, Walkers Shortbread, England
